Fizz 5G vs 5G+: Why the 5G Icon Is Missing (Fix)

Short answer

5G and 5G+ run on the same Fizz network. 5G+ means your phone is using the 3500 MHz band, which can be faster, but whether you see "5G" or "5G+" is decided by your phone maker. Two phones side by side can show different icons and get the same speed. If you see no 5G icon at all, you need three things: a plan that includes 5G, a 5G phone, and 5G coverage where you are. Then restart, set 5G as your preferred network and turn off battery saver.

Why this question keeps coming up

Since Fizz moved all plans with data to 5G, a lot of people on r/FizzMobile have asked the same things. Some have a 5G plan but never see the logo. Others see 5G+ on one phone and plain 5G on another and wonder if they are missing out. Fizz answers both in its own 5G FAQ, so here is the plain version.

5G vs 5G+: what is the difference?

Fizz describes 5G+ as an evolution of 5G that lets phones use the 3500 MHz spectrum, which allows higher speeds.

The catch is the icon. Each manufacturer sets its own rules for when to show 5G+. On most Android phones it mostly means the phone is on the 3500 MHz band. Other brands mix several technical criteria. Fizz says it plainly: the 5G+ icon is a visual indicator that depends on the brand and does not necessarily mean a real difference in quality or speed.

So if your friend's phone says 5G+ and yours says 5G in the same spot, you are probably getting the same network.

Why your phone does not show the 5G icon

Fizz lists three requirements. If one is missing, you stay on 4G LTE.

  • 1. A plan that includes 5G. If your line is on an older plan without 5G, you have to change plans, and the change takes effect at the start of your next payment cycle. So a plan switch made today may not show 5G until then.
  • 2. A 5G compatible phone. Check your phone's specs from the manufacturer. Fizz notes that 5G is not guaranteed on phones not bought from Fizz.
  • 3. 5G coverage. The Fizz 5G network serves the main urban areas and keeps growing. Check the Fizz coverage map for your street. Fizz also says 5G is not yet available in Manitoba.

One more thing that confuses people: on Fizz, 5G carries data only. Calls still go over 4G LTE (VoLTE), and Voice over 5G is not offered yet. Depending on the model, your phone may still show 5G during a call, or drop to LTE.

How to fix it: 4 quick checks

If your plan, phone and area all check out, Fizz suggests:

  • 1. Restart your phone (fully power it off and on). Do this after any plan change too.
  • 2. Make sure 5G is selected as the preferred network type in your settings. On many Android phones it is under Connections or Network, then Mobile networks, then Network mode. On iPhone, look under Settings, Cellular (or Mobile Data), Cellular Data Options, Voice and Data. Menu names change by model, so check your manufacturer's help page if you can't find it.
  • 3. Turn off power saving or low power mode. Some phones drop to LTE to save battery.
  • 4. Check the coverage map again at the exact spot. Indoors or at the edge of a 5G zone, the phone can switch back to LTE.

Still nothing? Your phone may not support Fizz's 5G bands, or it may need a software update. Calls should keep working either way as long as the phone is VoLTE compatible on Fizz. Our Fizz VoLTE and emergency calls fix covers that side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 5G and 5G+ on Fizz?+

5G+ means your phone is using the 3500 MHz band, which can allow higher speeds. Both run on the same Fizz network, and the icon you see depends on your phone maker's rules.

Why does my phone show 5G while another shows 5G+ in the same place?+

Each manufacturer decides when to show the 5G+ icon. Fizz says two phones in the same spot on the same network can show different icons while giving the same performance.

Why don't I see the 5G icon on Fizz?+

You need a plan that includes 5G, a 5G compatible phone and 5G coverage. If all three are in place, restart the phone, set 5G as the preferred network and turn off power saving mode.

When does 5G start after I change my Fizz plan?+

For an active line, the new plan and its 5G access take effect at the start of your next payment cycle. Restart your phone after the change.

Do calls use 5G on Fizz?+

No. On Fizz, 5G is for data only. Calls go over 4G LTE with VoLTE, and Voice over 5G is not available yet.

Is 5G available in Manitoba with Fizz?+

Not yet. Fizz says 5G is not yet available in Manitoba. Check the Fizz coverage map for your area.
